Cat Care

Helping your cat live a happy, healthy life

Cats are wonderful companions, bringing comfort, affection and personality to every home. With many cats living well into their teens—and often beyond—providing the right care throughout their life is one of the best ways to support their long-term health and wellbeing.

Whether you’ve recently welcomed a playful kitten or are caring for an older feline friend, our team is here to help every step of the way.

Creating a safe and enriching home

Cats thrive in an environment where they feel safe, comfortable and able to express their natural behaviours.

A comfortable place to rest

Provide your cat with a quiet, comfortable place to sleep indoors or in a sheltered outdoor area. Many cats naturally choose elevated or secluded places where they feel secure.

Increasingly, owners are also choosing secure outdoor cat enclosures, allowing their cats to safely enjoy fresh air while protecting them from traffic, fights with other cats and local wildlife.

Scratching and enrichment

Scratching is a natural behaviour that helps keep claws healthy and allows cats to stretch and mark their territory.

Providing scratching posts, climbing towers or cat trees encourages exercise, mental stimulation and helps protect your furniture.

Indoor cats particularly benefit from enrichment through toys, climbing spaces and elevated resting areas.

Litter trays

Cats are naturally clean animals and generally adapt well to using a litter tray.

Place litter trays in quiet, easily accessible locations and clean them daily. If you have multiple cats, a good rule is to provide one litter tray per cat, plus one extra.

Nutrition and hydration

A balanced diet is essential for your cat’s overall health.

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require a diet rich in high-quality animal protein to meet their nutritional needs. Many cats prefer to eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than one large meal.

Fresh, clean water should always be available, particularly if your cat eats predominantly dry food.

We recommend avoiding cow’s milk, as many adult cats are lactose intolerant and it can cause digestive upset.

Grooming

Regular grooming helps keep your cat’s coat healthy and reduces loose hair, knots and hairballs.

Short-haired cats usually manage most of their own grooming, although brushing during shedding seasons is beneficial. Long-haired breeds often require daily brushing to prevent mats and tangles.

Unlike dogs, healthy cats rarely need bathing unless specifically advised.

Preventative healthcare

Preventative healthcare plays an important role in helping your cat live a long and healthy life.

Regular health checks

Cats are experts at hiding illness, making regular veterinary examinations especially important. Annual health checks allow us to identify problems early and discuss any concerns about your cat’s health or behaviour.

Vaccinations

Routine vaccinations help protect your cat against serious infectious diseases throughout their life.

Parasite prevention

Year-round flea, intestinal worm and parasite prevention helps protect both your cat and your household. We’ll recommend a prevention plan based on your cat’s lifestyle.

Desexing and microchipping

Desexing offers many health and behavioural benefits while helping reduce unwanted litters. Microchipping also provides permanent identification should your cat ever become lost.

Pet insurance

Unexpected accidents and illnesses can happen at any stage of your cat’s life. Pet insurance can help provide peace of mind by assisting with the cost of veterinary treatment.
